Preparedness, Response, and Recovery
Businesses spend a significant amount of time and resources preparing themselves for a disaster. And in the corporate responsibility world, many companies also use their resources and expertise to help others prepare for and recover from disasters. Usually this means providing money, in-kind donations or expertise to assist large nonprofit agencies, such as those which are members of NVOAD (National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster.)
Why does business engage this issue?
Preparedness. Awareness about disaster preparedness is often strongest just after a catastrophe, but businesses and communities can work to strengthen their disaster resiliency at any time. Some of the ways to increasing resiliency could be as individual as purchasing the correct insurance, or as comprehensive as developing a city-wide operation to reinforce infrastructure and housing. But when disaster strikes an unprepared community, businesses suffer along with all of its other members. By helping the rest of the community prepare, business is being a good neighbor and ensuring the community’s overall stability.
Response. In the first few days after a disaster strikes, immediate needs are the priority. Organizations like the American Red Cross and members of NVOAD are some of the best-prepared first responders, and many businesses support their excellent work through cash donations. Other businesses may be able to contribute in-kind or expertise-related donations, such as food and water, heavy machinery, basic supplies, health products, logistics coordination, and more.
Recovery. This is the longest and often most-challenging of the three elements of disaster work because it is resource-intensive and perpetually under-funded. Although companies do also contribute cash to recovery efforts, they make in-kind or expertise donations based their field. Some of the challenges of disaster recovery in which business can play a helping role include debris removal, small business recovery, financial counseling, and more.

The Disaster Preparedness, Response, and Recovery Issue Network is committed to improving the efficacy of business philanthropy in disasters, breaking down information and coordination barriers between sectors, and highlighting the unique work of corporate citizens in the field. The businesses in this Network are committed to expanding individual and business preparedness, providing skills and resources for a robust response, and ensuring that long-term recovery is given due consideration in the disaster management cycle. This Issue Network seeks to:
